Aetherflux, a San Carlos-based space-based solar energy startup led by Robinhood co-founder Baiju Bhatt, raised $50 million in Series A funding, Axios reports. Index Ventures and Interlagos led, joined by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, NEA, A16z, Vlad Tenev, Tim Draper, Jared Leto and F.P. Journe.

The funding will be used to deliver energy to planet Earth. At a time when humanity is consuming more power than ever before, Aetherflux is taking an ambitious new approach: using satellites to capture the sun’s energy and wirelessly transmit power to the places that need it most.

“One thing I know about Baiju Bhatt is that he’s passionate about space. From growing up the son of a NASA scientist to studying physics and math at Stanford, he’s always talked about space as the ultimate market opportunity.

So last spring, when he told me about Aetherflux, I knew I had to be a part of it. What impressed me most was how he took a wildly risky and ambitious idea—launching satellites with solar panels into orbit and wirelessly transmitting power around the globe—and broke it down piece by piece to make it seem less like a moonshot and more like a blueprint” wrote Jan Hammer, General Partner of Index Ventures, in a Linkedin post.

Baiju Bhatt, the Founder of Aetherflux, grew up the son of a NASA scientist and studied physics and math at Stanford. After college, he co-founded Robinhood, democratizing finance and building one of the great companies of his generation. But those who know him best know he’s always been passionate about space.

“Space solar power can give the U.S. an asymmetric advantage by delivering energy where it’s needed most, day or night. This capability is especially valuable in remote or contested areas, including the Indo-Pacific, where traditional power delivery can be dangerous, expensive, or challenging. It can protect warfighters, reduce reliance on fuel convoys and infrastructure, and save taxpayer money” sums up Baiju Bhatt in his Linkedin post.

Current energy systems rely on complex logistics and outdated infrastructure, making them vulnerable to natural disasters, extreme weather, and physical and cyber attacks. Aetherflux overcomes these challenges by enabling direct, on-demand, secure, and scalable 24-hour energy distribution from space. This can revolutionize energy generation and delivery, and enable new capabilities as we deliver power to remote regions, military bases, bespoke operations, and unmanned autonomous systems.

Aetherflux is building a modern approach to space-based solar power. Our constellation of satellites will collect sunlight in Low Earth Orbit, convert it to electricity, and transmit power through infrared lasers to ground stations, providing reliable energy access where traditional delivery is expensive, challenging, or dangerous.
