Saffron Beyond Fields and Seasons: Czech Startup Spicy Cells Secures Investment to Transform Natural Ingredient Production

Czech biotech startup Spicy Cells has secured a €40,000 investment from Czech Founders VC. The company focuses on cellular agriculture and is the first in the region to cultivate saffron in bioreactors—without soil, seasonal weather fluctuations, or reliance on imports from high-risk regions. Saffron, however, is only the starting point. Spicy Cells aims to gradually expand production to a broader category of natural ingredients for the cosmetics, food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries.

The newly raised funding will enable the team to further refine its technology and prepare for the commercial phase of the project. At the same time, the company is gearing up for the entry of strategic investors who will support manufacturing scale-up, portfolio expansion, and international market entry.

Saffron is among the most expensive natural raw materials in the world, yet its production still relies on an extremely fragile and unpredictable system. Manual harvesting, heavy dependence on weather conditions, the impacts of climate change, and geopolitical risks all lead to major fluctuations in price, quality, and availability.

“Saffron is an extraordinary plant known since ancient times. It’s not just a spice, but a source of bioactive compounds with enormous potential. Today, however, we use only a small fraction of what it can offer. The main limitations are its scarcity, inconsistent quality, and limited availability.”

Rather than growing entire plants, the company has chosen a different path. Spicy Cells is developing a technology that enables saffron production in controlled bioreactor environments through the cultivation of plant cells. The result is plant biomass and extracts with precisely defined composition, independent of soil, season, or climate.

For Spicy Cells, saffron is not the end goal, but a means to an end. It serves as an ideal raw material for validating and fine-tuning the entire technological platform.

“Saffron is our first major technological milestone. It allows us to optimize processes and verify the functionality of the entire platform in real conditions. Once we have the process fully under control, we can apply the same approach to other natural compounds.”

The validation investment from Czech Founders VC confirms both the technological potential and the overall approach Spicy Cells is taking to natural ingredient production.

“Our ambitions go far beyond a single ingredient. We are building a scalable technology that enables sustainable production of a wide range of natural raw materials for cosmetics, food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical applications.”

What started as an informal initiative of people meeting after work to explore more sustainable alternatives to traditional agriculture has now evolved into a startup focused on increasing biomass yields and stabilising cultivation processes. The goal is to make production long-term repeatable, scalable, and ready for first customers.

“Spicy Cells convinced us with a combination of strong biotechnology, an ambitious team, and a clear vision of how to produce natural ingredients sustainably and at scale. Saffron is just the beginning. The real value lies in the technological platform, which has global potential.”
