The ESA BIC Czech Republic space business incubator, operated by CzechInvest, has launched the first edition of the ESA BIC Liftoff Challenge. The goal is to support the development of innovative projects with a space-related component and to engage students in particular – a key group with high innovation potential.

The space sector is no longer the exclusive domain of space agencies or so-called new space companies. This competition aims to motivate the younger generation to explore the applications of space technologies and satellite data.

The competition is open to individuals or teams of up to five members. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35. The main evaluation criterion is the “space connection” – i.e., how the project relates to the space sector in the broadest sense.

“A space-related project doesn’t have to be something destined for orbit. Many ideas apply space technologies right here on Earth – enabling innovative solutions that often give startups a competitive edge. Through the ESA BIC Liftoff Challenge, we want to give young people in the Czech Republic the opportunity to explore how space technologies and satellite data can empower their own ideas and turn them into impactful, real-world projects. We’ve designed the competition in a way that even participating can help students start thinking more like entrepreneurs,” says Michal Kuneš, Program Manager of ESA BIC Czech Republic.

The competition is structured into three rounds. In the first round, participants submit a short project description using the lean canvas format. The most promising ideas advance to round two, where teams will develop a full business plan with support from expert mentors. In the final round, the top concepts will be pitched live to a panel of judges.

The authors of the three winning projects will receive financial support to further develop their business ideas:

  • 1st place: CZK 60,000

  • 2nd place: CZK 30,000

  • 3rd place: CZK 10,000

In addition, the overall winner will have the opportunity to present their idea to investors at ESA BIC Launchpad 2025, a flagship event during the Czech Space Week 2025, the country’s largest space festival. Winners will also continue working with the ESA BIC Czech Republic team beyond the competition, with the aim of qualifying for incubation and transforming their idea into a functioning company.

“The Czech space ecosystem is developing rapidly, creating opportunities for a new generation of creators – not just engineers and scientists, but also entrepreneurs, visionaries, and students. Our goal is to create an environment where even young people can find the courage to think in space dimensions and actively shape the Czech footprint in space over the coming decades,” adds Tereza Kubicová, Deputy CEO for Technology Development at CzechInvest.

Applications are open until June 30, 2025, and at this stage, all that’s required is a creative idea and a completed lean canvas. Submit your application HERE.
