US-based Coupa Acquires Czech AI startup Rossum to Push Autonomous Finance Into the AI Era

Coupa has acquired Rossum , the Czech-founded AI startup specializing in intelligent document processing (IDP), in a move that signals the next phase of autonomous finance and enterprise AI adoption.

The acquisition deepens an existing partnership between the two companies, which has already focused on automating complex invoice workflows for Accounts Payable teams. Now, Coupa plans to integrate Rossum’s AI-native document intelligence across its entire source-to-pay ecosystem, bringing more automation, faster processing, and greater control over enterprise spending.

At the core of the deal is Rossum’s proprietary transactional large language model (T-LLM), purpose-built for understanding invoices and other business documents. Unlike traditional OCR systems that rely heavily on templates and manual configuration, Rossum’s platform continuously learns from customer workflows and document sets, enabling companies to process high volumes of complex invoices with minimal human intervention.

The startup’s AI models have been trained on tens of millions of transactional documents, creating a specialized layer of intelligence designed specifically for enterprise finance operations. Combined with Coupa’s massive procurement and spend data network – spanning more than $10 trillion in transactions – the companies aim to build a more autonomous decision-making layer for global procurement and finance teams.

“Rossum changes the game entirely. We’ve already seen the value of our partnership in AP automation, but this acquisition allows us to extend Rossum’s AI-first technology across the entire Coupa platform. Over the past 20 years, we’ve helped customers save more than $300 billion. With Rossum, we believe we can help them save the next $300 billion in a fraction of the time.”

For Rossum, the acquisition represents a major milestone in the journey from European AI startup to part of a global enterprise software platform. The acquisition also reflects a broader trend in enterprise software: AI moving from productivity enhancement into operational autonomy. Rather than simply assisting employees, platforms like Coupa and Rossum are betting on agentic AI systems capable of making procurement and financial workflows increasingly self-driving.

“Joining Coupa is the natural evolution of a years-long partnership built on a shared AI-first culture. By combining our transactional intelligence with Coupa’s global data scale, we have an opportunity to fundamentally change how businesses buy and sell.”

In addition to that, “Rossum is the market leader in AI-native document processing, and they are a vital addition to our roadmap. They bring the ‘eyes’ to our Navi agents—giving them the ability to see and process the most complex data with 90%+ accuracy,” noted Leagh Turner during Coupa’s internal event and in her LinkedIn post

Rossum, founded in Prague, has become one of Central Europe’s most recognized AI startups, helping enterprises automate document-heavy processes across industries including manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and finance. The company built its reputation by rethinking document processing from the ground up with AI-native infrastructure instead of legacy OCR approaches.

With enterprise demand for automation accelerating, the Coupa-Rossum combination positions both companies at the center of one of the fastest-growing segments in B2B AI: autonomous back-office operations.
